The first Samatha meditation class started in London in 1963, taken by Nai Boonman, closely followed by classes in Cambridge. The Samatha Trust was founded in 1973, a Manchester Centre opened in 1977, and in 1987 the Trust bought Greenstreete Farm in Powys, Wales, as our national Samatha Centre.

Over the years a number of experienced Samatha meditation teachers have settled in and around London, and by 2011 there are six meditation classes in London for both beginners and experienced meditators. Classes are held in hired rooms, or members’ homes.

To develop further, a London Centre is needed as a permanent base, which would also take pressure off the busy national centre.
